Difference Between Coatings and Sealants
The term "sealant" is often used differently in car care, especially regarding "coatings" and "sealants." Both terms describe products that form a protective layer on the wrap but differ in their application and durability. Coatings are easier to apply and ideal for beginners. Products like C2v3 or Sapphire offer excellent protection without requiring extensive experience or special tools. They reliably shield against everyday dirt, water spots, and UV rays. Sealants, on the other hand, provide longer-lasting protection solutions that form a deeper and more resilient protective layer on the surface. However, they require more precision in application and are hence more suitable for experienced users. If long-term protection for your wrap is sought, sturdier coatings should be considered, providing optimal protection even under challenging conditions.
Proper Preparation: How to Seal or Coat the Wrap
To ensure maximum protective effect of the sealant or coating, thorough preparation of the wrap surface is essential. First, the wrap must be thoroughly cleaned to remove dirt, dust, and residues. Specialized cleaning agents for wraps are ideal here, as they do not attack the delicate structure and appearance of the surface. After cleaning, defatting the wrap with an IPA mixture (Isopropyl Alcohol) up to 50% is necessary to remove oil and grease traces that could impair the adhesion of the sealant. Only after this preparation should the sealant or coating be applied. It is crucial to apply the products evenly and precisely for perfect results. Use clean applicators and follow the manufacturer's instructions.
With the right preparation and the suitable product, you can ensure that your wrap is optimally protected and its brilliant appearance – whether matte, glossy, or satin – is preserved for a long time. For more information and helpful tips, we recommend our detailed Know-How Article.
